Is Jesus Lord over your life?

In the heart of Christian faith lies the profound declaration that Jesus is Lord. This belief isn't just a doctrinal statement; it's meant to be a transformative reality that impacts every aspect of our lives. But what does it truly mean for Jesus to be Lord in our day-to-day existence? This statement over the last two years has haunted me in a good way, I have come to ask myself the question is Jesus really Lord over all places of my life, or only the places that are convenient. As an Anabaptist the declaration of “Jesus is Lord” is central to our value system. We hold fast that this statement is a might declaration and way of life. Here is my attempt at unpacking this bold declaration.
Understanding Jesus as Lord
To say "Jesus is Lord" is to acknowledge his supreme authority and centrality in our lives. The term "Lord" implies ownership and control, suggesting that Jesus is not just a savior but the rightful ruler of our hearts and lives. This declaration is rooted in Scripture, where Jesus is affirmed as Lord in various passages, from the early church's creeds to the teachings of the apostles. However, the reality of Jesus as Lord goes beyond intellectual assent; it’s about living under His lordship in practical, everyday ways.
The Impact on Personal Identity
When Jesus is Lord, our personal identity is profoundly affected. It shifts our self-understanding from being primarily about personal achievements and societal roles to being about our relationship with Christ. We begin to see ourselves through the lens of God's love and purpose. This new identity reshapes how we view our worth and mission in life.
For example:
Purpose: Understanding Jesus as Lord gives us a deeper sense of purpose. Our goals and ambitions are reoriented towards His kingdom rather than personal gain.
Self-worth: Our value is rooted in Christ’s love and sacrifice, not in external validation or material success.
Shaping Our Daily Choices
The reality of Jesus as Lord should influence our daily decisions and actions. It means aligning our choices with His teachings and values. This involves a commitment to live according to His principles, whether it's in how we handle finances, make career decisions, or interact with others.
Consider how this plays out:
Ethics: Our moral and ethical decisions are guided by Jesus' teachings. For instance, honesty, integrity, and compassion become central to our behavior.
Relationships: Our relationships are marked by love, forgiveness, and service, reflecting Jesus' example and command to love one another.
Transforming Our Relationships
Jesus as Lord impacts how we relate to others. His lordship calls us to embody His love and grace in our interactions. This means fostering relationships that reflect His teachings and working towards reconciliation and unity.
In practice:
Forgiveness: We are called to forgive others as Jesus has forgiven us, even in challenging circumstances.
Service: Emulating Jesus' servant leadership, we seek to serve others rather than seeking to be served.
Navigating Challenges
The reality of Jesus as Lord provides a framework for navigating life’s challenges and adversities. When we acknowledge Jesus as Lord, we trust in His sovereignty and seek His guidance in difficult times. This trust transforms our approach to suffering and uncertainty.
Examples include:
Peace in Trials: Even amid trials, we find peace knowing that Jesus is in control and working for our good.
Guidance in Decision-Making: We seek His wisdom and direction in making choices, relying on prayer and Scripture.
Living Out the Kingdom of God
Acknowledging Jesus as Lord involves participating in the kingdom of God, which is characterized by justice, mercy, and peace. Our lives should reflect the values of this kingdom, challenging injustice and working towards the common good. This practical value to me is the most important, because our lives should reflect the kingdom in every aspect, Jesus made this bold declaration in Matthew 4:17 “From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (ESV)
How this manifests:
Advocacy: We stand against injustice and work towards societal changes that reflect God’s kingdom values.
Generosity: We practice generosity and care for the marginalized, reflecting God’s love and justice.
Peace: Living at peace with God and others is central to our faith.
Embracing a Transformative Lifestyle
Living with Jesus as Lord leads to a transformative lifestyle. It calls us to continual growth and alignment with His will. This means ongoing reflection, repentance, and renewal in our spiritual journey.
Transformation includes:
Spiritual Growth: Engaging in spiritual disciplines like prayer, study of Scripture, and fellowship to deepen our relationship with Christ.
Repentance: Regularly evaluating our lives, seeking forgiveness, and striving to live more closely in accordance with Jesus' teachings.
Final thoughts,
Embracing Jesus as Lord is not merely a theological assertion but a lived reality that shapes every facet of our lives. It redefines our identity, influences our choices, transforms our relationships, and provides guidance through life's challenges. As we affirm Jesus as Lord, we are invited into a dynamic and transformative relationship with Him, one that continually reshapes our lives and the world around us.
In the everyday moments of life, the reality of Jesus as Lord challenges us to live with purpose, integrity, and compassion, reflecting His kingdom in all that we do. In my walk with Jesus, I have begun to live in this reality and declaration. This is a prayer that I have begun to pray daily to root this Lordship in my life.
Prayer:
Jesus you are Lord over all areas of my life. Today, I choose to fully surrender to your Lordship and leading. Expose every area of my life not under your Lordship, and give me the grace to overcome. I submit to you today as Lord. I love you Jesus, and I love your Lordship. Amen.
