Is Jesus Lord over your life?

In the heart of Christian faith lies the profound declaration that Jesus is Lord. This belief isn't just a doctrinal statement; it's meant to be a transformative reality that impacts every aspect of our lives. But what does it truly mean for Jesus to be Lord in our day-to-day existence? This statement over the last two years has haunted me in a good way, I have come to ask myself the question is Jesus really Lord over all places of my life, or only the places that are convenient. As an Anabaptist the declaration of “Jesus is Lord” is central to our value system. We hold fast that this statement is a might declaration and way of life. Here is my attempt at unpacking this bold declaration.

Understanding Jesus as Lord

To say "Jesus is Lord" is to acknowledge his supreme authority and centrality in our lives. The term "Lord" implies ownership and control, suggesting that Jesus is not just a savior but the rightful ruler of our hearts and lives. This declaration is rooted in Scripture, where Jesus is affirmed as Lord in various passages, from the early church's creeds to the teachings of the apostles. However, the reality of Jesus as Lord goes beyond intellectual assent; it’s about living under His lordship in practical, everyday ways.

The Impact on Personal Identity

When Jesus is Lord, our personal identity is profoundly affected. It shifts our self-understanding from being primarily about personal achievements and societal roles to being about our relationship with Christ. We begin to see ourselves through the lens of God's love and purpose. This new identity reshapes how we view our worth and mission in life.

This practical value to me is the most important, because our lives should reflect the kingdom in every aspect, Jesus made this bold declaration in Matthew 4:17 “From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (ESV)

How this manifests:

• Advocacy: We stand against injustice and work towards societal changes that reflect God’s kingdom values.

• Generosity: We practice generosity and care for the marginalized, reflecting God’s love and justice.

• Peace: Living at peace with God and others is central to our faith.

Embracing a Transformative Lifestyle

Living with Jesus as Lord leads to a transformative lifestyle. It calls us to continual growth and alignment with His will. This means ongoing reflection, repentance, and renewal in our spiritual journey.

• Spiritual Growth: Engaging in spiritual disciplines like prayer, study of Scripture, and fellowship to deepen our relationship with Christ.

• Repentance: Regularly evaluating our lives, seeking forgiveness, and striving to live more closely in accordance with Jesus' teachings.
